This is the blog for Amizero Kompagnie, a Rwanda dance, theatre and performance company based in Kigali, Rwanda. Amizero originated at the University Centre for Arts and Drama at the University of Rwanda, Butare in 2005 as Rwanda’s first professional contemporary dance company. Since then, Amizero has evolved produced dance and theatre productions in Rwanda and has toured internationally. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Wesley Ruzibiza, the company has moved to Kigali and is now an independent non-profit. In 2012, Amizero Kompagnie launched Rwanda’s first contemporary dance festival, East African Nights of Tolerance (EANT), which has hosted Rwandan and international groups to perform for capacity crowds in Kigali every year since. Amizero Kompagnie’s recent works include Frontières: Between Me and You (2012); Run Run Run (2013), Radio Play (2014).
Amizero is part of the UCD Network, Arterial and The East African Network for Dance Practitioners. EANT/Amizero is a founding member of the Africa Mashariki Dance Network, which works to create a circuit of contemporary dance in East Africa under the AMDA network (Africa Mashariki Dance Network). The Kompagnie has received generous support from institutions including the Institut Français, the Prince Claus Fund, the Swiss Development Cooperation, and the Goethe Insitute. Amizero frequently offers workshops for students of many backgrounds and seeks to engage new audiences as we believe everyone has the right to culture.
